"The Greatest Ally We Ever Had" - Discussion of 'Changing Our Minds: The Story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker

Join us as we continue to celebrate LGBT History Month for a discussion of the documentary "Changing Our Minds: The Story of Evelyn Hooker" facilitated by UHD Professor of Psychology Dr. Kristin Anderson. Dr. Evelyn Hooker is arguably the most important ally in all of LGBT history thanks to her groundbreaking study of homosexuals that demonstrated that homosexuality was not, as the fields of psychiatry and psychology assumed, a mental illness. Hooker's study resulted in two decades of debate before homosexuality was finally removed from the list of mental illnesses in 1973. Where would we be if Hooker had not done the important work that she did? Dr. Anderson will be addressing this question and more in our discussion. "Changing Our Minds" is available online for viewing, including free viewing for UHD community members through Kanopy. See GatorMail for more details. The film will also be showing throughout the day on Monday, October 25 in S-370, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, as well as from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday October 26.
