The Harvest/La Cosecha profiles these three as they journey from the scorching heat of Texas' onion fields to the winter snows of the Michigan apple orchards and back south to the humidity of Florida's tomato fields to follow the harvest.

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM NS Fall 2017 Colloquium Series: New Insights Into Back-Arc Subsidence
Please join us for our first NS Fall 2017 Collolquium Series featuring Dr. Jeffrey Martz, Assistant Professor of Geo-Sciences.

The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation and Dockum Group of the western United States consist primarily of fluvial sediments deposited in the back-arc basin of the Cordilleran volcanic arc. In recent years, revised lithostratigraphic correlations within these units in Utah and Texas, supplemented by biostratigraphic correlations and radioisotopic dating, have revealed contemporaneous trends between these states during the Late Triassic. In both states, the lower part of the section thickens and the upper part of the section becomes erosionally truncated in the direction of the Cordilleran arc, and fluvial “megafans” prograde away from the arc, resulting in the diachronous deposition of coarse-grained facies from south to north. These revised correlations and interpretations help to define the geometry of the sedimentary basin. They also suggest that deposition was greatest proximal to the arc during the early Norian, but became more regionally uniform during the middle to late Norian and Rhaetian. These trends also seem to indicate a middle Norian and Rhaetian intervals of thermotectonic uplift in the arc and Ouachita-Marathon orogenic belt. These correlations support the occurrence of the episodic faunal changes in ecosystems that included early dinosaurs.
