2:30 PM - 3:30 PM What Can I Learn From Student Ratings?
While student ratings are dismissed by some educators for having little to offer, these ratings can in fact be highly beneficial to teachers who want to improve their skills. Students can provide helpful and legitimate feedback on what they feel they learned, workload levels, and observable behaviors that include the teacher’s pace, volume, clarity and organization. We show you how to read student ratings to help make you a better teacher.

3:00 PM CSET Fall 2016 Colloquium Series: Data Analytics in Various Intelligent Human-centered Systems
Presenter: Dr. Ting Zhang, Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Time and Location: 3:00 PM on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 in N1099

Abstract: The presentation is about data analytics in various intelligent human-centered systems. These systems can be big in size for astronomical detection, and can be very small in size, which can be worn by human beings as wearable devices. Ting’s research in computer science started from the joining of LIGO, designing data analytics algorithms for the search of gravitational waves in giant systems. The computation was carried out by super computers. After creating various machine learning algorithms for the research of the origin of the universe, Ting designed several intelligent human-centered systems for healthcare. The systems are wearable devices. The computation was carried out by microprocessors. These systems include, the SmartShoe system for the rehabilitation of Cerebral Palsy and Anorexia Nervosa, the SmartSock system for daily activity monitoring, and the SmartGlove system for the rehabilitation of stroke patients. Ting’s presentation will be about the state of the art computing technologies’ contribution to these systems. The name of the presentation is related with the name of ‘Da Vinci’, a gentleman who devoted his whole life with great passion to the exploration of the beauty of art, engineering and science.

Please attend according to your interest and schedule, and encourage interested students to take advantage of this opportunity.

11:00 AM From the Deep Ocean to Deep Conscience: Evolutionary Origins of Neural Networks
Title: From the Deep Ocean to Deep Conscience: Evolutionary Origins of Neural Networks
Presenter: Mr. Adolfo Lara, Graduate Student, American Museum of Natural History, New York City & UHD alumnus.
Time and Location: 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 29, 2016 in Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium

The College of Sciences and Technology is pleased to host Mr. Adolfo Lara for an invited seminar.

Mr. Lara is a UHD alumnus that was a Scholars Academy peer mentor for two years. While at UHD, Adolfo conducted undergraduate research in the Department of Natural Sciences with Dr. Lisa Morano on the plant pathogen, Xylella fastidiosa for two years. Adolfo’s work with Dr. Morano resulted in two peer-reviewed publications on which Adolfo was an author. Adolfo was also an NIH-funded Minority Access to Research Careers grant undergraduate scholar that conducted research at the UT-Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

After participating in the annual Natural Sciences-sponsored Science in the Big City Trip to New York City (NYC), Adolfo was admitted to an NSF-funded Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in NYC. After graduation from UHD, Adolfo was one of six undergraduate students admitted into the PhD program at AMNH. While completing his PhD at AMNH, Adolfo now hosts UHD undergraduate students at AMNH as part of the annual Science in the Big City Trip. Adolfo is a model of success and powerful example and illustration of the high-impact nature of undergraduate research in students going on to pursue a Ph.D.
