Presented by George Williams, SJ, PhD

His talk will focus on how those in public service can frame their own study and career plans in the light of compassion for human suffering. He will discuss his own research on burnout and resilience - research sparked by his observations of suffering not just of prisoners, but of those who guard them. Dr. Williams leads by example, demonstrating the importance of getting to know offenders by name and not just as data points.

11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Speak Out Event - LGBTQIA+ In An Era of Anti-LGBTQ Backlash
In spite of progressive victories for LGBTQIA+ people in the courts--particularly the winning of marriage equality--at the state level there is a massive backlash against LGBTQ people taking place across Middle America and the South. Much of the ire of conservative state legislatures is directed at trans folks who simply wish to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity (which most have been doing for many years), with bills being put forward that would prevent even trans children from using a restroom that doesn't match the gender declared on their birth certificates. All of this adds stress to the already stressful experience of being LGBTQIA+ in America. Join us and Speak Out about how this challenging time in our history has been impacting you. Share with us what's on your heart.
