11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Speak Out! About Hurricane Harvey: Sharing Out Stories As We Move Forward Together
Hurricane Harvey impacted the lives of every Houstonian and every resident of the Houston region, and Harvey's aftermath continues to disrupt the lives of so many members of our campus community. From the tragedy of lost lives and lost pets, to the trauma of lost homes and possessions, members of our community will bear the scars of Harvey for life. Together we experienced the fury of nature at its worst, and the kindness, compassion, and generosity of people at their very best, from neighbors from down the street, volunteers from across Texas, and good people who came from across the nation with boats, supplies, and a determination to help us in our time of need. Join us as we gather to share what's on our hearts and Speak Out(!) in the wake of the most devastating urban flooding event in modern history. Come share your stories and your feelings with your fellow Gators as we begin what for many will be a long process of healing and of making our lives whole once again as we rebuild both materially and emotionally.

11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Film Screening & Discussion - The Harvest/La Cosecha
Every year there are more than 400,000 American children who are torn away for their friends, schools and homes to pick the food we all eat. Zulema, Perla and Victor labor as migrant farm workers, sacrificing their own childhoods to help their families survive. The Harvest/La Cosecha profiles these three as they journey from the scorching heat of Texas' onion fields to the winter snows of the Michigan apple orchards and back south to the humidity of Florida's tomato fields to follow the harvest.

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM NS Fall 2017 Colloquium Series: New Insights Into Back-Arc Subsidence
Please join us for our first NS Fall 2017 Collolquium Series featuring Dr. Jeffrey Martz, Assistant Professor of Geo-Sciences.

The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation and Dockum Group of the western United States consist primarily of fluvial sediments deposited in the back-arc basin of the Cordilleran volcanic arc. In recent years, revised lithostratigraphic correlations within these units in Utah and Texas, supplemented by biostratigraphic correlations and radioisotopic dating, have revealed contemporaneous trends between these states during the Late Triassic. In both states, the lower part of the section thickens and the upper part of the section becomes erosionally truncated in the direction of the Cordilleran arc, and fluvial “megafans” prograde away from the arc, resulting in the diachronous deposition of coarse-grained facies from south to north. These revised correlations and interpretations help to define the geometry of the sedimentary basin. They also suggest that deposition was greatest proximal to the arc during the early Norian, but became more regionally uniform during the middle to late Norian and Rhaetian. These trends also seem to indicate a middle Norian and Rhaetian intervals of thermotectonic uplift in the arc and Ouachita-Marathon orogenic belt. These correlations support the occurrence of the episodic faunal changes in ecosystems that included early dinosaurs.
