2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Supporting Academic Reading: Practical Strategies Instructors Can Teach Students

Supporting Academic Reading: Practical Strategies Instructors Can Teach Students

Although it may be hard to fathom, 8th-grade students’ reading performance has improved substantially over the past two decades. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), black and white kids have improved half a grade level; Hispanic kids have improved a full grade level; and Asian kids have improved 1½ grade levels. Nevertheless, when the students reach UHD, critical reading abilities still seem to present a major barrier to success. This session introduces research-based strategies designed to support students in the reading process. The session not only places emphasis on the importance of planning for reading, but it also focuses on connecting reading material to prior knowledge, understanding the text structure, and using text-processing strategies before, during, and after reading to enhance comprehension. This session is appropriate for all faculty/instructors and staff in both academic courses as well as in the area of student services.
