All Day Film Screening & Discussion - "The Mask You Live In" (Multi-Day Event)
This film follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America's limited definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer groups, and even the adults in their lives, these young men confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, to devalue authentic friendships, to objectify women, and to resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become "REAL" men.

Building Gator Grit: Cultivating Positive Learning Environments to Enhance Motivation for Diverse Learners

Session Description: Grit, resilience, mindset – attitudes and beliefs that signal intrinsic motivation – have recently become widely recognized in popular culture as important ingredients of success. However, research on the relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic success goes back many decades. Much is known about the value and practice of fostering motivation among diverse learners (including age, cultural, and socio-economic diversity). This workshop provides a foundation for faculty and staff to reflect on how our own mindset influences how we think about students and offers alternative practices in order to create positive learning environments. Grounded in culturally responsive pedagogy, the workshop will help participants develop a deeper understanding of the connections between student development, motivation, engaged learning, and culture. It helps answer two important, related questions: How might my practices be reframed to foster a learning environment which establishes inclusion, develops positive attitudes, and engenders competence? And, how can I as an individual faculty or staff contribute to increased enrollment and student persistence?

Facilitator: Jonathan Grant Brown, Program Manager, AVID for Higher Education, http://www.avid.org/speakers-bureau.ashx
